



Parrots, cockatoos and macaws enjoy eating walnuts. Most medium to large parrots can easily open walnuts in there shells however smaller parrot species can also be offered walnuts if they are pre-cracked and split into two halves.

All nuts, although high in fat content, are rich sources of both polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats. Walnuts, for example, contain several substances that protect against heart disease. With a 7:1 ratio of polyunsaturated to saturated fat, walnuts offer one of the highest natural occurring proportions of this good fat, which is shown to effectively reduce cholesterol. Walnuts are the main non-fish source of Alphlinolenic acid, a key EFA from which Omega -3 fatty acids are derived. Walnuts offer a good source of protein; Walnuts are also a rich source of dietary fibre a known cholesterol cutter and provide Vitamin E, a potent antioxidant and an aggressive heart defender. Walnuts have no dietary cholesterol.
